Natural Diamonds: The D.Bachet Approach

Key takeaways from this guide:

  • The 4Cs are the foundation for assessing a natural diamond, but they do not tell the whole story.
  • Each natural diamond is selected according to technical, aesthetic and ethical criteria.
  • White, black and colored diamonds each require a specific approach to selection.
  • At D.Bachet, each natural diamond is chosen to bring out the design of the piece.

Natural diamonds have been at the heart of D.Bachet jewelry since the Maison was founded in 2004. From engagement rings and wedding rings to pendants and bespoke jewelry, each piece begins with the careful selection of natural diamonds chosen for the design.

Diamond quality is only part of what defines a piece of jewelry. At D.Bachet, we also pay close attention to the design, proportions and setting, as well as to the choice of 18k gold or 950 platinum. Every detail is carefully considered to enhance the brilliance and character of the natural diamonds.

Beyond the 4Cs: Our Gemological Expertise

Assessing the quality of a natural diamond goes beyond the 4Cs. While Carat, Cut, Color and Clarity provide the international standard for diamond grading, other characteristics also influence how a diamond reflects light and its overall appearance.

To evaluate each diamond in greater detail, we also consider the information provided on certificates issued by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and HRD Antwerp. Depending on the diamond, these reports provide detailed information on characteristics such as proportions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence.

These characteristics directly influence a natural diamond’s brilliance and the way it reflects light. Alongside the 4Cs of diamond quality - Carat, Cut, Color and Clarity - they are an essential part of our diamond selection process.

Diamond quality standards: For our natural white diamonds, we favor stones with Excellent polish and symmetry grades and no fluorescence (None). These additional grading criteria allow us to assess each diamond beyond its carat weight, color and clarity grades.

Diamond certification: Natural white diamonds weighing 0.30 carat and above are accompanied by an official diamond grading report issued by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or HRD Antwerp, two internationally recognized gemological laboratories. Some 0.20-carat diamonds may also be certified, depending on market availability.

Responsible diamond sourcing: The natural diamonds selected for our jewelry comply with the Kimberley Process, an international certification scheme established to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate diamond supply chain.

Our high standards for natural diamond selection are reflected in every D.Bachet jewelry piece, handcrafted in 18k gold or 950 platinum.

White and Black Diamonds: The Art of Contrast

In diamond jewelry, selecting each stone is not only about its individual quality. The way diamonds are combined also shapes the perception of light, volume and the overall design of a piece. At D.Bachet, the contrast between natural white diamonds and black diamonds creates graphic compositions in which the brilliance of the white diamonds is enhanced by the depth and intensity of the black diamonds.

Black and White Diamonds: A D.Bachet Signature

Since its founding, D.Bachet has explored the contrast between white diamonds and black diamonds through jewelry designs that bring the two together. The brilliance of white diamonds meets the depth of black diamonds, creating a distinctive balance of light, volume and graphic lines.

This signature contrast can be found throughout our BlackLight collection, as well as in other D.Bachet jewelry designs where the combination of black and white diamonds becomes an integral part of the design.

French Jewelry Craftsmanship:
The Art of Bespoke Jewelry

Selecting a natural diamond is only the beginning. How the diamond is set into the finished piece plays an essential role in revealing its brilliance. The craftsmanship of 18k gold or 950 platinum, the choice of diamond setting and the proportions of the design all influence how the stone captures and reflects light.

Setting Techniques for Every Creation

The Craftsmanship of 18k Gold and 950 Platinum

In our French workshop, each jewelry piece is handcrafted in 18k gold or 950 platinum. The proportions, openwork details and lines of each setting are carefully designed around the diamond to enhance its brilliance and light.

Bespoke Jewelry and Personal Guidance

Whether you are looking for an engagement ring, a wedding ring, a signet ring or a bespoke jewelry piece, we guide you through every stage of your project. Each piece is made to order in our French workshop, following the quality standards that define Maison D.Bachet.

The Same Standards for Every Piece

Since the Maison was founded, the same exacting standards have guided the selection of our natural diamonds. This attention to quality extends to our choice of 18k gold and 950 platinum, the design of each setting and every stage of the jewelry-making process.

We approach each piece as a whole, bringing together the diamond, precious metal and the craftsmanship of our French workshop in a balanced design.
